You brought home a bed, the cat slept in the box it came in, and the bed has been a very expensive cushion ever since. This is not spite. Cats choose a sleeping spot on four criteria, and a bed that misses any one of them gets ignored.
The four things a cat checks
- Height. A cat that sleeps high feels safe. A bed on the floor competes with every other flat surface in the room.
- Containment. Most cats want walls, not a flat mat. A cuddler with a raised rim beats an open pad nearly every time.
- Temperature. Cats run warmer than we do. A bed that is too soft traps heat and gets abandoned in summer.
- Smell. Brand-new synthetic fabric smells wrong. A bed that already smells like the household wins.
What to change first
Move the bed before you replace it. Put it on a shelf, a windowsill or the back of the sofa, somewhere the cat already chooses to sit. If that works, the problem was location, not the bed.
If it does not, try rubbing the bed with a cloth you have handled, or tuck in a worn t-shirt for a week. Cats are conservative about new smells, and this is the single cheapest fix available.
When to buy a different bed
If the cat is sleeping in a sink, a laundry basket or a cardboard box, look at the shape of that spot. That shape — not the one in the catalogue — is what you should be buying.
